The New Zealand  ‘Department Of Conservation’ also known as DOC is a government department that basically looks after all the land that the government owns. This is an area of just under one third of New Zealand and includes forests, mountains, coastal areas, lakes and islands. DOC will help you with advice on the hiking trips New Zealand is offering

All the land that DOC controls is protected mainly for conservation reasons. Another task for DOC is providing for recreation. Part of this is operating and maintaining the huts on the DOC land. They operate just under one thousand huts in all shapes and sizes.

There are 4 different catagories of huts:

  • Great Walk Hut.
These huts are very comfortable, have fueled heating, water supply, toilets, hand washing basins and mattresses. The more fancy ones will also have fuel cooking facilities and solar lighting.
  • Serviced Huts.
These huts have fueled heating, water supply, toilets, hand washing basins and mattresses.
  • Standard Huts.
These huts have mattresses, water supply and toilets. If the hut is below the bush line they will also have wood burning heaters.
  • Basic Huts and Bivvies.
These huts give basic shelter, with limited facilities

You have to pay Hut fees for overnight stays in the huts and nearby campsites. Most back country huts work on a first come first served basis and can’t be booked before hand. All the Great Walk huts have to be booked in advance.
