This hike is a real challenge and not for the faint hearted. The Avalanche Peak summit lies 1100m (3700ft) above the starting points. There are 2 tracks up to the summit. Both tracks are very steep in places. The Scotts track is steeper than the Avalanche Peak track. They are both classified as tracks up to the bush line and after that they become poled routes
You can do the hike as a round trip or go up and down the same way.. It is recommended not to do this hike in the winter time. It takes about 6 to 8 hours to complete. The views along the way over the mountains and valleys around are specteculair.
The hike starts from Arthur’s Pass village, which is situated along SH 73 between the East and West Coast of the South Island
