The Charming Creek Walkway lives up to its name. It follows an old railway track that used to transport coal through the Ngakawau Gorge, from the Charming Creek mine to Westport in the late 19th and early 20th centuary.
Along the track you will see all the rusty leftovers from that era. There are also tunnels and a suspension bridge.
The spectecular Mangatini Falls can be seen from this bridge.
The return trip takes about 6 hours to complete and you can start at the Ngakawau end 35km (22miles) north of Westport on the West Coast of the South Island or from Seddonsville along a 10km (6mile) gravel road.
If you can arrange transport, you can walk it one way from either end.
