Rangitoto Island lies in the Hauraki Gulf in Auckland. It was formed by volcanic eruptions only 600 years ago.
The hike is about 12km long and takes about 5 1/2 hours to complete, including stops.It starts off from the wharf, where the ferry lands It goes up to the summit which is about 260m (700ft) above sea level. On the summit you will have great views of the city of Auckland. Then the track goes down to the west coast and follows the coast line back to the wharf.
The island has the largest Pohutukawa forest in the country.
