The hike to Te Puia Hut Lodge is one of the most popular in the Kaweka Forest Park in the western part of the Hawkes Bay province. The hike to the hut is about 7km (4miles) long and takes about 3hours to complete. It follows the Mohaka river. The terrain is undulating, with the highest climb about 80m (250ft).
The hut is very comfortable, with gas heating and cooking and running water from a rain water tank.
The main attraction are the nearby Mangatainoka Hot Springs. These are situated about 45minutes walking west of the hut. The hot water comes out of a rock and runs into 2 fibre glass tubs, in which people can sit. If you like you can camp out there for the night.
To get to the car park from Napier, follow Puketitiri Road to the end, then turn right into Pakaututu Road. Then turn left into Makahu Road.
