The Greenstone Caples Track is situated in the Otago province. It is a loop track starting from the shore of Lake Wakatipu, the famous lake next to Queenstown. It borders on the east side of the Fiordland National Park.
The hike is 61km (38 miles) long and takes 4 days to complete and is defined as moderate. You will have to be reasonably fit.
There are 3 huts along the way. The huts have coal fired heating, mattresses and running water in the summer. You can also camp out next to the huts. The huts have to be booked in advance. This can be done at any Department of Conservation office.
The hike can be done in either direction. If you go in clockwise direction the track follows the Greenstone River. This valley is very open and is covered in tussock and forest, mainly beech. The Caples valley is narrower, also covered in forests and areas with grass.
To get to the start of the track from Queenstown, first travel to Glenorchy then to Kinloch, from here follow the Greenstone Road to the end.
