The Queen Charlotte Track is situated in the Marlborough Sounds in the north of the South Island, it is 71km (44 miles) long and takes 3 to 5 days to complete. The track is undulating, but fairly easy going. The highest point is about 400m (1300ft) above sea level.
This coastal hike goes past coves and inlets, over ridges and through native forest, which will give you spectacular views all along the way. Forest and sea birds can be seen and heard during the hike.
The mild climate in this part of the country allows you to do this hike all year round.
The start point of the hike is at Ship Cove. This can only be reached by boat from Picton. You can arrange to have your pack carried by boat between the different places that you stay.
There are 7 campsites along the way, which are run by the Department of Conservation (DOC). These campsites have drinking water and toilets. There are also private campsites, cabins and motels that you can stay at
