The St.James Walkway is situated in the Lewis Pass area in the centre of the South Island.
The hike is about 66km (41 miles) long and is spread out over 5 days. It suits experienced and inexperienced hikers. This is a sub-alpine hike with a great variety of scenery along the way. It is classified as an easy hike, but only people with experience should do it during the winter time.
There are 5 huts along the way. All the huts have mattresses and heating. You need to purchase hut passes from the Department of Conservation (DOC) before setting out on the trip. It is adviced to bring a tent along, just in case the hut is full. The stay in the huts is on a first come first served basis.
The hike starts at the Lewis Pass car park along State Highway 7 and finishes at the Boyle Village also along State Highway 7
