The Sunrise Hut Track is in the Ruahine Ranges in the central North Island. It is the most popular hike in this area. The reason for this is that the track gently zig zags up from the start at 600m (2000ft) above sea level to 1350m (4500ft), so it is achievable for most people.
You can make it a day trip or an overnight trip staying in Sunrise Hut, which is very comfortable. On a clear day you will have a beautiful view over the Hawkes Bay province. If you go up a bit further behind the hut you can get a view over Mount Ruapehu, the highest mountain on the North island
In the winter time the area around the hut is covered in snow. This is another reason why this hike is so popular.
To get to the start of the track you have to turn off into Wakarara Road of State Highway 2, near Onga Onga. Then at the end turn left on to North Block Road until you get to the Triplex Hut carpark.
