The Rakiura Track is situated on Stuart Island, a smaller island just south of the South Island. It is one of the so called ‘Nine Great Walks’ of New Zealand. It can be reached by airplane from Invergargill or by ferry from Bluff.
The track is a circuit that can be completed either direction. The hiking part of the track is about 32km (20 miles) long, but to complete the circuit you have to follow the road for about 7km (4 miles). The hike takes 3 days to complete and can be done all year round.
The track follows the coast in some parts and goes through forests in other parts. Stuart Island is completely covered in vegetation. Along the way a great variety of forest birds and sea birds can be seen and heard.
There are 2 huts and 3 campsites along the way. If you like to stay in any of these facilities you have to book before departure. This can be done at the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre in Halfmoon Bay,on Stuart Island or on line
