The Heaphy Track is the longest of the so called ‘Nine Great Walks’ 80km (50 miles) long. It starts at Brown Hut at the end of Aorere Valley Road coming from Collingwood.
It is situated in the northwest of the South Island and part of Kahurangi National Park. It is an easy going track, suitable for most people. There are proper bridges across all the rivers and streams.
The hike goes through beech forests in the eastern part and along Nikau palms on the West Coast beaches. The Kahurangi National Park holds lots of native birds and over fifty percent of New Zealands native plants can be found here.
The hike would normally take 5 days and can be done all year round There are 11 huts and shelters along the route. There are also 9 campsites, some of them next to the huts. Bookings for the huts and campsites have to be done all year round. This can be done on line.
